What I’m Grateful For In 2020

It’s been a year like no other. Literally. 2020 brought some unprecedented stuff that we wouldn’t wish on our worst enemies. There were fires and floods and then COVID-19, changing the way we do everyday things and creating a ‘new normal’ which will never actually be normal.

Even though this year has been a massive challenge, there were still positives to come to light through all the darkness.

Finishing my first book

If it weren’t for COVID-19, I probably never would have finished my first book or be about to publish it. The lockdown regulations forced me to spend most of my time at home – not an easy feat with a (screaming) baby.

While I’m a homebody at heart, having something to work on other than cleaning my kitchen or folding washing was a saviour for my sanity. I didn’t have to miss (or avoid) any social situations to have more time for myself and, once the baby was napping, I had time to make a cup of tea and settle down with my laptop for some editing.

Working From Home

COVID-19 has forced a hand for flexible working conditions and, unexpectedly, worked in the favour of women transitioning back into the workforce after maternity leave.

I have always believed in flexible working arrangements, mental health days and making sure to have a work-life balance – yes, I do believe it exists! But many workplaces fear having their staff at home where micromanagers can’t lay eyes on them directly.

I’m so grateful that COVID-19 allowed me to work from home for as long as I needed after returning to maternity leave. It made the transition back into work so much easier when I could be at home with my baby and didn’t have to pump in a store closet in my office.

Working from home made my life a whole lot easier. I was able to see my baby whenever I wanted, continue to breastfeed, keep my home tidy and organised, and save two hours (and sanity) on travel five days per week.

being a parent

I spent the first six months of this year as a stay at home mum with a husband who worked very long hours. Lockdown prevented social visits or getting out of the house and if it wasn’t for FaceTime with grandparents and the mum’s group on WhatsApp, I might have lost my sanity.

Being a first time parent has been extremely challenging, but my daughter has taught me so much about the world and about what really matters. I’m so grateful for the time we spent together, just the two of us, stuck at home for what seemed like an endless amount of time.

It’s taken a bit of time to get used to the title of parent and the challenges seem never-ending (hello, what is sleep?), but being a parent is the best thing in the world.

FEELING MYSELF

I’m going to level with you: I did not feel like myself for a long time after having my daughter.

I had pre-eclampsia and was induced three weeks early and was presented with a screaming baby who wasn’t ready to come out into the world. The adjustment period was long and hard and physical recovery seemed to be impossible when I wasn’t sleeping for more than two hours at a time.

But, I gave it time. Being in lockdown allowed me to take things slowly, to work out at my own pace, to eat good, homemade food, to rest when I needed to. It forced me to slow down and not feel like I had to do all of the things otherwise people would think less of me.

Now, at the end of 2020 – the end of a crazy year – I’m finally feeling like me again. I feel healthier, wiser and happier, and I’m so grateful for that.
