A Day In My Life: Anne Novek

I can’t be the only one who is obsessed with those ‘A Day in My Life’ videos on YouTube. Surely, out of all the thousands of viewers these videos get, there has to be someone else who is willing to admit that they LOVE getting an insight (even if it is an edited one) into someone else’s life.

If you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen my own (slightly sarcastic) version this week, complete with a bit of office goss, my desperado snacks and a meme from my favourite account. It was a little snarky, but completely honest way that I spend my day.

Now, I love watching ‘A Day in My Life’ videos from women who have built incredible lives for themselves in rented apartments with floor to ceiling windows, ordering in salads for lunch, doing try-ons of their latest hauls and generally living their very best lives.

I can openly admit that my life isn’t that exciting. I’ve switched up floor to ceiling city views for a backyard in suburbia, I take my own lunch to work most days and the only time I’m doing a try on is when I’m getting ready for work and am probably late.

I wanted to share my ‘A Day in My Life’ routine because everyone’s writing journey (and general day-to-day life) is so different. Once a month, I’d love to feature someone different to run us through their day, so if you’re interested to have your day featured or you have someone in mind that I should feature, leave a comment on this post.

6:00am

Turn off my alarm and lay in bed for a few minutes, contemplating if I should go and workout. Ultimately decide that I should at least get up now that I’m awake. Go for a (very slow) half hour jog or workout in my gym room.

6:45am

Stretch and mope internally about all the flexibility I’ve lost because I haven’t been stretching. Shower quickly because I’ve wasted too much time sitting down to ‘recover’ after my workout. My morning routine has changed now that I’m not working from home full-time.

7:00am – 8:00am

Depending on which day of the working week it is, I may not just be getting myself ready for work, but also my small human. Three days a week, though, I’m lucky enough to leave her with my husband or our nanny and I can skip off to work 90 percent sure that my shirt doesn’t have traces of dried Weetbix on it that I will only find by lunch.

8:00am – 9:00am

Even though I hate the morning traffic and the time I have to spend in a travelling to work, I embrace the chance to listen to an audiobook or a pump up playlist and have some me-time before my day really starts.

9:00am – 5:00pm

Though I worked from home for six months during COVID-19 in 2020, you’ll usually find me back in the office during the week. My adjustable standing desk, floor to ceiling city views and multiple screens allow me to be much more productive than when I’m working from my tiny laptop at my kitchen table.

I work in corporate reporting and project management (get it? The Boring Job Project). It’s as exciting as it sounds. It’s very factual and serious, without much room for creativity. I spend my days coordinating other people to submit reports and keep track of projects across the organisation.

I am so lucky to have THE BEST team and work in a great organisation. My gal pals and I are constantly coming up with ideas to improve what we do and pitching them to management. We work so well together and can seamlessly slip in and out of each others projects as needed, and provide honest feedback without getting offended.

At lunch, I heat up whatever I’ve brought from home and we sit in the lunch room or in our secret spot and chat. If I’m the only one in the office, or we’re too busy to take lunch together, I spend my lunch break ticking off things on my to-do list that I’m able to do at work, like making calls and doing research.

After lunch, we usually make tea and scrounge up some sort of chocolate snack from the desperado drawer after swearing that we were all trying to lose weight, before continuing with meetings or whatever spreadsheet we were working on.

5:00pm – 6:00pm

I get another hour to myself to drive home. I usually spend it listening to an audiobook or talking to my mum and sister on the phone in a three-way chat. It makes battling the traffic and turtling along the highway in second gear much more bearable.

6:00pm – 9:00pm

Between when I get home and when my daughter goes to sleep, I try to spend as much time as possible doing ‘normal things’, like having dinner together, cleaning up the kitchen, putting the washing away, reading books, watching a little television and getting ready for bed.

I’ll be honest, I can rarely do actual work when she’s in the same room. I find it hard to focus and I don’t want her to think that I’m always working and don’t have time for her.

When the weather is nice, we play outside with the dogs or go for a walk during this time too.

9:00pm – 10:00pm

I’ve never been a night owl or a night-writer, but since my daughter has decided that she is, I’ve had to become one. I spend the last hour of my day trying to fit in some writing and editing, or whatever it is I have noted down in my trusty planner.

Usually, there is some sort of home renovation or real estate television show playing in the background. I find HGTV very relaxing, even though real life renovation completely stresses me out.

I also like to stretch during this time to help myself wind down for sleep. There’s also usually tea and some sort of biscuit involved in this time of the night. The Lotus Biscoff biscuits are one of my favourites.
